Promotion building on Catlins film

Inspired by the success of New Zealand movie Two Little Boys, the Catlins is being promoted through a national competition encouraging visitors to have "the best, last weekend ever in the Catlins".

Venture Southland tourism marketing co-ordinator Hannah Fraser said the tagline was made famous by Hamish Blake, as Nige, in Two Little Boys, and said it was wonderful to see interest in the Catlins continuing to develop.

"It's such a special place and the movie really was fantastic in showcasing the region's stunning beauty. Feedback from operators has been that they have seen increased activity post-movie, and with the enthusiasm we are seeing in this competition."

Catlins tourism operators were eager to get involved in the competition, helping to build a prize valued at more than $5000. Without their complete support the competition could not have gone ahead, she said.

Tourism Catlins projects co-ordinator Kim Dodds said the group was "extremely excited" with response to the contest.

"Since the release of Two Little Boys we have noticed a major increase in interest in the Catlins. The forecast for this summer is very positive and I would expect the local operators will be extremely busy."

It was pleasing to see Catlins operators make the most of the contest, she said.

The competition closes next Sunday, October 21 and winners will enjoy their holiday in the Catlins this summer.
