Southland highway where man shot reopens

Police have completed a scene examination on a road where a man was shot and have reopened the highway in Southland.

The man was sought after concern for a woman yesterday.

Officers found him on State Highway 1 at Dacre, north of Invercargill, where he pointed a weapon at officers, police said.

"He was subsequently shot by police before midday."

The man was taken to hospital for surgery. He was in serious but stable condition today, a spokeswoman for police confirmed.

SH 1 between Kerr Rd and SH 98 had been closed since early yesterday afternoon and motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible and take alternate routes. 

Police advised about 1.30pm today that was now open again, and thanked motorists for their patience and understanding.
