Plans are firming up for next month’s  America’s Cup visit to Otago and Southland’s regional centres.

The cup, along with Team New Zealand members and representatives from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, will visit Oamaru, Wanaka, Queenstown and Invercargill in October as part of a regional tour.

Squadron general manager Hayden Porter, of Auckland, said the oldest sporting trophy in the world would arrive  in Oamaru on October 15,  going to  Wanaka and Queenstown on October 16 and Invercargill on October 17.

North Otago Yacht and Power Boat Club commodore Kevin Murdoch said the club’s plans involved a train and a horse.

The horse was still being worked on.

"We need a horse and cart because we want to take the America’s Cup from the Brydone Hotel and through Harbour St [on one]. That’s Oamaru."

He said Oamaru’s celebrations for the cup would

run from 1pm to 7pm, with boats on the water for people to have turns at sailing and food trucks at the club. From Scotts Brewing Company, people would be able to take the Oamaru Steam and Rail Society’s train to the boat club on Waterfront Rd,  free.

Mr Murdoch said the Waitaki District Council and local businesses were being "incredibly supportive" of the event.

Bluff Yacht Club commodore Anders Jagvik said discussions were still under way about what the club would do, but everyone was delighted to be welcomed to take part in the tour.

Wanaka Yacht and Power Boat Club commodore Jeff Mercer expected his clubs’s plans to be finalised by the end of Monday.

"We plan on having food caravans and have some boats rigged up. We’re still discussing it."

He expected the the cup would be at the club for sometime, but it  could also be taken to Mount Aspiring College and primary school pupils could visit it there.

Queenstown’s Wakatipu Yacht Club commodore John Stalker could not be reached for comment.

Mr Porter said which representatives from Team New Zealand would come was still being worked out as people’s racing calendars had to be negotiated, but he expected the details would be locked in by the end of next week.

The former Queenstown local would miss the Otago tour of the cup regretfully.

"I’ll just organise it and let everyone else enjoy it."
