Tree falls on railway tracks as winds buffet Invercargill

Strong winds have been buffeting Invercargill this afternoon resulting in fallen power lines and trees being uprooted.

At the corner of Tyne and Nith Sts an old macrocarpa tree was blown over onto railway tracks near St Mary’s Basilica.

Firemen could be seen using chainsaws to clear the line.

Elsewhere, Fire and Emergency NZ shift supervisor Lyn Crosson said that power lines had been blown down in Kennington.

She said there were also reports that flashing had been blown from some buildings and there had been one report of a roof lifting off a garage.

Ms Crosson said there were no reports of anyone being injured.
