Climber’s family still to be notified

Czech authorities in Australia are still trying to contact the family of the man who fell to his death on Mt Aspiring on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the Consulate General of the Czech Republic based in Sydney said it was hoped the man’s family would be contacted within the next day.

The man, in his mid-20s, fell more than 200m on to the Therma Glacier from the Northern Buttress area on the northwest ridge of the mountain.

He and another climber, from Australia, had made the summit of the mountain earlier in the morning and were on their descent when the Czech man fell.

They were not roped together. The Australian was uninjured.

Honorary consul for the Czech Republic in New Zealand Vladka Kennett said it was a very sad and unfortunate accident.

"Not only do they now have to deal with their loved one, but also the insurance and repatriation work that goes with these things."
