People are piling into the Wanaka Showgrounds for Otago's Ranfurly Shield match against Thames Valley this afternoon.

The match is Otago's first defence of the Log o' Wood after they wrested it off Waikato in October last year.

That gates opened at 12.30pm for the match, which kicks off at 2.05pm, and  by 1pm an ODT reporter said there was " a lot of foot traffic" heading to the venue.

The sun was out in the resort town, but MetService has a weather warning in place for heavy rain about the Otago headwaters. The warning takes effect from 2pm.
