New Year's Eve party-goers packed into Wanaka's bars and lakefront to celebrate for one last time in 2016.

An estimated 5000 to 6000 people welcomed in the New Year in the town centre.

Long lines awaited those trying to squeeze into the many bars and restaurants along Ardmore St while large groups of drunken teenagers roamed the street itself.

A police officer spoken to by the ODT said it was starting to be a very interesting night but by that point there had been only a few incidents.

A few spots of rain could not dampen the spirits of those who had lined the lakefront to see the fireworks display at midnight.

Elsewhere in the Upper Clutha more than 7000 people welcomed the new year at the Rhythm and Alps festival in the Cardrona Valley, while in Lake Hawea more than 1000 revellers celebrated the new year at the Top Paddock music festival held at the Lake Hawea Hotel.
