Extra parking too late for this season

Extra parking to help ease overcrowding at the foot of the Roys Peak Track will not be in place for the busy summer period.

The Department of Conservation is in the final stages of buying land next to the track's existing car park, which will double the capacity.

On most fine days, finding a space is difficult and vehicles spill over on to the verges of the narrow Mt Aspiring Rd.

A temporary car-parking area was added earlier this year.

Yesterday at least 100 vehicles were parked at the track and filled both parking areas, which meant vehicles had to park on the side of Mt Aspiring Rd.

November is generally considered to be part of the ''shoulder'' season, when visitor numbers are lower.

Doc Wanaka spokeswoman Annette Grieve said the department had negotiated with the owners of Alpha Burn Station (the McRae family) to buy 0.36ha of land opposite the existing parking area.

Ms Grieve would not disclose the cost of the purchase but said the land had been bought at the valuation price plus surveying costs.

Work on the new parking area would not start until early next year, she said.

Doc expected the temporary parking area would help with the overcrowding until then.

The parking upgrade would be done at the same time as the Queenstown Lakes District Council's widening of Mt Aspiring Rd.

Walkers spoken to at the car park yesterday said they were not surprised by the popularity of the track but the lack of parking spaces annoyed them.

American couple Josh and April Sigler arrived at 7.30am and theirs was the second vehicle in the car park.

The couple, who were in the third week of their New Zealand trip, had expected the track to be busy after they encountered a large number of people at other sites, such as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Mr Sigler said it was already difficult to take a photo at the peak without getting other walkers in the shot, and it was not the busiest time of year.

He suggested people be charged a small amount to use the track so the number of visitors was kept at a sustainable level.

Doc is unable to charge or limit the number of people using its tracks.
