Fundraiser a personal mission

Auckland cyclists Bruce Cotterill and Paul Muir are on a mission to promote men’s health charities in their 2500km fundraising tour of New Zealand.

The men were resting in Wanaka yesterday after starting at North Cape on February 25.

They have just 271km to pedal to reach Bluff on Friday.

Golf was a chance to stretch sore muscles while their bikes were in the workshop.

They aim to raise $100,000 for Farmstrong, a farmers’ mental health charity, and $100,000 for the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Register. Motivation came from the personal stories of friends and family members.

"On the prostate side, we’ve have had some very good friends the last few years who have unfortunately had prostate issues. A mate of ours had an operation literally just last week, a bit of out of blue," Mr Muir said.

"On the mental health side, I have a family member who is no longer with us ... It just brought home the fact that if they had someone to call or someone to talk to the outcome might have been different."

Mr Cotterill is a business adviser and writer and Mr Muir is a former executive leader of Rip Curl. They have multiple sporting passions.

So far, they have raised $142,000 on their Bike for Blokes website and Givealittle page.
