Aurora Energy has installed temporary generators in Makarora after heavy snow left the Otago township without power over the weekend.

The power was cut after power lines were downed by trees laden with snow, on Friday about 10am.

An Aurora spokeswoman yesterday said six temporary generators were installed so the majority of customers had power overnight on Saturday.

"A large generator is being installed today so all residents will have temporary generation until the repairs are made," she said yesterday.

The company called on Makarora residents to check on their neighbours when it updated them on the situation for the second time, on Saturday.

"Our field teams are working hard, in what is pretty poor weather," Aurora said in the update.

There was extensive damage to the company’s equipment caused by trees in Meads Rd at The Neck, it said.

This included 400m of lines down in rough terrain and a broken cross arm.

Near the Makarora Country Cafe there was a broken wire and four cross arms to replace, Aurora said.

It was believed there was damage in the hills and Aurora crews patrolled the line on foot.

"Weather permitting, we will also use a helicopter to do an aerial survey of the line," the company said.

For the customers who remained without power on Saturday night, the company arranged for cabins in a local campground to be connected to a generator supply, if residents needed a place to stay.

Also, a temporary generator was connected to the old fire station in Kiwi St, which had been opened for people to use the kitchen facilities, charge their devices, fill their Thermos and "warm up" Aurora said.

Makarora recorded sub-zero, below freezing level, temperatures at the weekend.
