A Wānaka adventure guide company is encouraging women to reach new heights this winter through a series of courses, events and trips.

Avalanche recovery, rescues, terrain assessment and forecasting are among the topics being covered.

Aspiring Guides co-owner Doug Breech said they had wanted to do something like this for a long time.

"The women's series is about creating space for women to step into the back country on their own terms, with expert guiding and a supportive group around them.

"We’re incredibly proud to be launching this for the first time this winter," he said.

The series begins this month and concludes in October with a five-day glacier touring trip to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park or the West Coast.

"The hope is that this series becomes something women look forward to every winter, and that it helps grow the community that lasts well beyond any single trip."
