A Wānaka Football Club side with a local core lost 4-2 away to Christchurch’s Coastal Spirit over the Anzac holiday weekend.

The match represented a significant milestone for the visitors, who started with an entirely homegrown midfield three of Zack Adams-Biggs, Ethan Arratia and Dominic Plimmer

The opening 20 minutes proved a stern test for the Wānaka side.

Coastal Spirit dominated the initial phase, making it difficult for the visitors to apply any meaningful forward pressure.

This dominance was spearheaded by a familiar face; Coastal captain Weston Bell, a Wānaka local, delivered several dangerous corners that kept the Wānaka defence on high alert.

Despite the early pressure, Wānaka remained resilient.

Goalkeeper Josh Shackleton kept the side in the contest with a series of good saves, while the back line of Samba Will, Stanley Blair and Oliver Horgan put in strong defensive performances to repel the Coastal attacks.

The tide began to turn when Wānaka’s coaching staff implemented key positional changes.

Dillan Kahale moved into the striker role while Lucas Pedrozo shifted into attacking midfield.

This adjustment unlocked the wings, allowing Ethan Arratia and Wynn Skinner to consistently get behind the Coastal defensive line.

Wānaka began executing quick, well combined attacks and created several quality chances.

By the time the whistle blew for halftime, the visitors had wrestled back control, leaving the score locked at 0-0.

Wānaka came out of the gates flying in the second period.

A free kick from Plimmer led to a goal mouth scramble where Kahale found the back of the net.

However, the celebrations were cut short by a controversial offside call from the linesman.

Undeterred, Wānaka found their breakthrough just two minutes later.

A brilliant, rapid transition ended with Skinner’s clinical finish to make it 1-0.

The lead was short lived as Coastal Spirit increased their intensity.

Wānaka struggled to adjust to the renewed pressure, leading to a series of corners.

Coastal eventually equalised through a scramble in front of the goal.

The momentum swung heavily towards the hosts following a stroke of misfortune for Wānaka; a ball struck a hand during a clearance attempt, resulting in a penalty that Coastal converted.

Shortly after, the hosts capitalised on another corner and sustained pressure to stretch the lead to 4-1.

Wānaka refused to fold, clawing back a goal when Kahale reacted quickest to a dropped shot from the Coastal goalkeeper.

While the match ended in a 4-2 defeat, Wānaka FC showed bright moments of cohesion and tactical flexibility against one of the region’s toughest opponents.

The team now looks ahead to their next fixture, returning home to play Dunedin City Royals at the Wānaka Recreation Centre tomorrow.
