After fifteen years in the job, Wanaka's Edgewater hotel, conference centre and wedding venue general manager Mike Barton (at right in photo) says it is time to step down and pursue private projects.

Australian born Jon Brown (left), who has been financial controller at the award-winning Edgewater for the past four years, will take over from Mr Barton at the end of the month.

With record numbers of tourists to the region, Mr Brown said his immediate goal was just to get through this bumper summer and autumn period.

"We just finished February at nearly 100% occupancy, which is the biggest in the hotel's history, so it is a matter of maintaining and supporting the staff where I can."

He said in the long term he would be leading the team on refurbishment projects and continuing "the southern warmth and family orientated culture that Edgewater is known for".
