Quake data for conference

Some of the most recent data from the Kaikoura earthquake will be presented at a geoscience conference being held in Wanaka this week.

The Geoscience Society of New Zealand is holding its national conference in the town and the recent magnitude-7.8 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks will be a hot topic.

About 250 geoscientists are attending the conference, which ends today.

University of Otago head of geology Prof James White said an open session would be held today at which initial data from the earthquakes would be presented. Some of the data had already been given out at the conference, he said.

''We've already seen some pretty impressive photos of things like ruptured fault lines, which are pretty exciting ... ''

More than 10 geoscientists who planned to attend the conference had instead chosen to continue to study the earthquake and aftershocks, he said.

The keynote talk of the conference would focus on Noel Benson, who was the first professor of geology at the University of Otago.

A public session on New Zealand's fossil record was held at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Monday night.

Field trips to areas of geological interest in Otago were also being held.
