Science, social science and community involvement melded yesterday when 125 Mt Aspiring College year 9 pupils replanted a section of degraded forest near the lakefront walking track with native plants.

The joint Te Kakano and Queenstown Lakes District Council project, E tipu e rea, or ``Grow the new Generation'', was the culmination of a year-long project about ecology, the importance of habitat restoration and using plants sourced locally.

Pictured are council parks officer Diana Manson (left) and Te Kakano Trust chair Jo Guest watching one of the five year 9 classes at work.
