Rescue after climbers fall on Mt Aspiring

Two people have been flown to Dunedin Hospital after falling while climbing on Mt Aspiring this morning.

Police were alerted to a personal locator beacon activation in the Mt Aspiring National Park about 10am after a group of six climbers got into trouble.

A police spokesperson said two climbers remained at the Colin Todd Hut on the northwest ridge of the mountain and would be airlifted later today, while another two were able to walk out by themselves.

The extent of the injuries of the pair being flown to Dunedin was not yet known. 

A St John spokesman said the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter was sent to the area at about 10.30am.

Another helicopter was also used to locate the climbers

The rescue was being run by the Rescue Coordination Centre.
