The Sasaki family, of Wanaka, is urging the public to sign an online petition calling for New Zealand's only residential special school for girls with intellectual impairments, Salisbury School, in Nelson, to be kept open.

Renon Sasaki (19) attended Salisbury for two years and is now a student at Mt Aspiring College, in Wanaka. Her father, Hisashi Sasaki, says Salisbury was a wonderful environment and gave his daughter confidence.

Public consultation over Education Minister Hekia Parata's proposal to close the school at the end of the year finishes tomorrow. Pictured, are Yumi and Hisashi Sasaki with their daughter Renon.
