Violent incidents keep Wanaka police busy

Wanaka police were kept busy on Saturday night with a brawl and an assault within an hour of each other.
Police were called to a fight involving about 20 people on the lake shore opposite the Lake Bar at about 11.40pm on Saturday night.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said two groups had to be separated after a fight between them broke out.

One man continued to try to fight and was arrested on a charge of disorderly behaviour. He later apologised to police.

Snr Sgt Grindell said it was fair to assume alcohol was a factor in the fight.

A short time later two visitors were assaulted by two Wanaka men as they waited for their food outside the Doughbin Bakery on Ardmore St.

Both men were punched in the head and knocked to the ground where they continued to be punched and kicked.

Snr Sgt Grindell said it appeared words were exchanged between the two groups before the punches were thrown.

Both victims received minor injuries, he said.

One man had been arrested and charged with assault and police had identified another man involved and were trying to locate him.
Snr Sgt Grindell said it was not known if the two incidents were related.
