A 32-member squad of Wānaka rowers secured four medals at the South Island Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha on January 27-28.

Winning one gold, two silvers and a bronze showed the club was "punching well above our weight against the bigger clubs," junior club captain Will Radford said.

There were 1400 athletes competing in challenging conditions at the regatta in Twizel.

Radford said the training and competition this season had been constantly disrupted by wind.

"This regatta was similarly affected, with most of the racing on Saturday abandoned.

"Sunday saw some rain but overall good water conditions," he said.

An amended schedule meant final placings had to be taken taken from the timed heats.

Top Wānaka performances included:

  • Annie Wells and Annika Massey, gold in the women’s club double.
  • Annie Wells, Annika Massey, Lola Ritchie, Kate Ritchie and Lauren Bensmann (cox), silver in the women’s u19 coxed quad.
  • Fenella Millen and Sienna Marsden, silver in the girls intermediate double scull.
  • Hugo Sinclair and Will Pascoe, bronze in the novice boys double scull

Radford said the Wānaka Rowing Club was now building towards the final two school regattas of the season and ultimately the Maadi Cup.
