Construction of the roundabout at the State Highway 6 and SH84 intersection at Mt Iron, near Wanaka, will begin in February.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency confirmed yesterday Fulton Hogan would lead the construction of the $5 million project.

The 40m-diameter, single-lane, five-leg roundabout was expected to take about a year to complete.

Waka Kotahi principal project manager Brendon French said a significant portion of the roundabout could be built off-line, near the site.

"This will lessen the impact on road users and allows us to limit delays where possible.

"The design of the roundabout shifts the intersection to the north slightly which means most of the roundabout can be constructed off-line," he said.

However, disruption will be unavoidable as each leg into the roundabout will need to be realigned, Mr French said.

"While we estimate this will take a year to complete this is also dependent on labour and material availability in addition to weather conditions."

The intention was to have the bulk of the roundabout construction completed before winter and the tie-in legs and surfacing completed in the spring, he said.

The proposed roundabout was anticipated when work on a new water-supply pipe, connecting pipes under the Sir Tim Wallis Dr roundabout and the Albert Town wastewater pumping station, started last year.

Waka Kotahi data between 2011 and 2020 showed one person was seriously injured at the intersection, 18 people suffered minor injuries and 21 crashes resulted in no significant injuries.
