As councils across the South look ahead to a busy year in local politics, the Otago Daily Times speaks to leaders about what’s on the horizon in 2026. Today, Environment Southland chairman Jeremy McPhail answers our questions.

What are your priorities for the year ahead?

Progress flood infrastructure improvement projects, continue to support community action to enhance and improve the environment and continue to demonstrate the value that ES has in the region.

What opportunities do you see in the year to come?

Continue to support community with advice, funding and support. Build relationships with our new councillors, both on our council and with the other councils in our region and continue the conversation with the Local Government Commission on Southland councils’ reorganisation.

What challenges do you see?

Supporting our communities through the ongoing government reforms and other legislative changes. Continued uncertainty for our councillors and staff and our communities.

How do you plan to navigate these?

Maintain our strong local relationships and continue to advocate for Southland solutions that work for our communities

What New Year’s resolutions do you have for yourself?

Always good to lose a few kilos and look after one’s health.

How did you spend your holiday break?

Enjoying catching up with family and spending time on the farm.
