About 14,000 bricks with messages of support and love were laid last week by volunteer contractors at the Southland Charity Hospital in Invercargill.

Three years ago, the hospital board launched the buy-a-brick campaign as a fundraiser for the hospital, giving donors the chance to leave a personalised mark on the project.

Southland Charity Hospital Board member Melissa Vining said volunteers battled rough weather but the mission was completed last Friday.

‘‘I don’t even know how to describe the feeling when I look at them.

‘‘They are just so beautiful and it’s such a powerful visual representation of the community support.’’

She said the work at the building was tracking well and would be completed by the end of the year.
