Able Minds is a charitable trust that provides support to anyone affected by mental distress and addiction and their families.
The trust’s chief executive Sarah Dowie said a potato grower in Invercargill approached them and said he had 4 acres of potatoes he wanted to donate.
The only catch was Ms Dowie had to figure out how she was going to get the potatoes out of the ground and into people’s homes.
However, she said with the support of the Able Minds community, it wasn’t that hard.
"When I was told about the potatoes, I just immediately thought about the community and knew that Able had the ability to pivot really quickly and get it done."
She said within a week they put a plan together and on Tuesday had a team and client building day where more than 50 people showed up to harvest the potatoes.
"It makes me feel really good that we’re able to come together really quickly operationally and make this happen for families in need because everybody is affected by the cost of living crisis and this is just a really good way to help out."
The potatoes would be available for anyone in need at the Intercultural church in Centre St, Invercargill.
Ms Dowie said all people had to do was bring a bucket and a gold coin.
