Shireen Crumpton (Hill City) struggled with her Achilles tendon injury and failed to defend her Auckland Marathon title yesterday.

Crumpton (41), a Dunedin nurse, finished third in her 28th marathon in 2hr 56min 5sec.

The race was won by Lisa Robertson (Auckland) in her debut marathon in 2hr 41min 56sec, with Australian Kirsten Molloy second in 2hr 48min 10sec.

She passed through the half-marathon in 1hr 18min, a faster time than Danielle Ingram-Trevis (Auckland) ran when winning the New Zealand half-marathon title in 1hr 18min 36sec. It was held on the same course in Auckland.

Robertson (28), an Auckland jockey who won the national road title last month, will represent New Zealand for the first time at the Chiba Ekiden road relay in Japan next month. She broke the race record Crumpton set last year by 3min 55sec and finished 10th overall.

Crumpton was happy with her third place. She finished 24th overall and was the first masters woman to finish.

"My Achilles was sore the whole way," Crumpton told the Otago Daily Times from Auckland. "I ran my own race and passed through the half-marathon in 1hr 25min."

Crumpton will defend her title in the Kepler Challenge at Te Anau before she has an operation on her foot in December.

"I will be off running for three months and don't expect to be able to race seriously for six months," she said.

Wanaka's Oska Inkster-Baynes finished fifth in 1hr 11min 10sec in the New Zealand half-marathon and was the first Otago runner to finish. Inkster-Bayne (20), the winner of the Dunedin half-marathon last month, showed he can match the best distance runners in the country.

Tony Payne (Caversham) was 13th in 1hr 13min 13sec and James List (Ariki) 19th in 1hr 17min 34sec.

The national title was won by Stephen Lett (Auckland) in 1hr 7min 38sec from Scott Winton (Auckland) 1hr 9min 46sec and Stefan Smith (Canterbury) 1hr 10min 1sec.

The minor placings on the podium in the women's race were filled by Sally Gibbs (Waikato) 1hr 19min 48sec and Gabrielle O'Rourke (Wellington) 1hr 20min 23sec.

Dale Warrender (38), who represented New Zealand at the 2004 Olympic Games at Athens, won the Auckland Marathon for the fourth time in 2hr 24min 42sec. He is based on the Gold Coast.

The minor placing were filled by Christchurch's Phil Costley in 2hr 28min 18sec and Blair McWhirter in 2hr 33min 4sec.
