Larissa Dyke (Taieri) has a defining goal this year: to get back into the sprint relay team for the Commonwealth Games and break the New Zealand 100m record.

She spent last year on the sidelines with a stress fracture of the femur and was dropped from the elite New Zealand squad.

Michelle Seymour (Wellington) ran the New Zealand record at a Grand Prix in Melbourne 21 years ago in 11.32sec.

The Otago record of 11.60sec was run by Anna Smythe (Hill City) in 2007.

Dyke's best time of 12.06sec was run two years ago at a Grand Prix meeting in Hamilton.

She returned from injury this year and ran her third 100m of the season when she won the Otago title into a strong head wind at the Caledonian Ground on Sunday in 13.11sec.

Since returning to the track after her long injury break, Dyke has done a lot of technique work with coach Brent Ward to make sure she is running with a correct style.

''I have tried to run upright and increase my speed cadence,'' she said.

''I got a bit confused in my first race back when I raced the boys and couldn't put anything together.''

Her big races this season are the New Zealand championships in Wellington at the end of March and the Australian championships in Melbourne in early April.

The stress fracture of the femur came from over-use.

''It was a rare injury. It was a 1.5cm crack on the biggest bone in the body.''

Dyke (28), the marketing manager at the Fortune Theatre, has had a long-term ankle injury and thought the stress fracture came from that.

Surgeon Chris Burke took the spurs away from her ankle and did reconstruction work on her talus bone on August 28 last year.

''I haven't had any injuries, niggles, soreness or pain since,'' Dyke said.

''I had a three month rehab and I'm back racing again.''

Dyke was selected in the New Zealand 4 x 100m relay squad in 2012 and ran at the Oceania championships in Cairns and Japan.

Dyke won the 100m in Cairns and was third in the 200m. The relay team was disqualified.

She ran her last race for the squad in Timaru a year ago, when she got the stress fracture of her femur.

She had no performances at the action end of last season and was dropped from the squad.

''It was very frustrating and disheartening, because they still haven't told me that I'd been dropped,'' Dyke said.

''Their communication is not the best.''

Dyke has refocused her goals this year and wants to run 11.5sec for the 100m and get back into the squad.
