Otago schools won an impressive 28 gold medals at the South Island secondary schools athletics championships in Timaru on Saturday.
The championships were the final track and field meeting for the summer and there was plenty of top talent on display.
The King's High School team of Keanu Vanisi, Flynn Murdoch, Gregor Clarkson and Duncan Trevithick set a record in the 4 x 100m relay in the under-14 grade, breaking the record held by Otago Boys' by nearly half a second.
The King's under-16 4 x 100m relay team of Josiah Lesa, Jack Addis, Max Aitchison and Sam Gouverneur equalled the record.
Taieri College pupil Zharna Beattie also set a record in the discus in the under-14 grade with a throw of 36.24m.
She beat the record held by Courtney Martin, of East Otago High School, by more than a metre.
Dunstan High School jumper Adriana Mawhinney, who has had a successful year, completed her season by winning the high jump and the triple jump in the senior grade.
Mount Aspiring College youngster Jack East won the 200m and 400m double in the under-14 grade. He picked up the silver in the 100m.
Nico Bowering, of John McGlashan College, won the 100m and 200m in the under-15 grade.
Lesa won the 100m and the 80m hurdles in the under-16 grade.
King's High School also won the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relay in the senior grade.
Ethan Walker, of Tokomairiro High, won the javelin in the under-14 grade in a triumph for small schools.
Mount Aspiring College runner Sam Burke won the 3000m in the under-19 grade.
