Centers 2nd at Cooks Classic

Hill City-University runner Fiona Centers, of Dunedin, emerged with a second-place at Tuesday night's Cooks Classic.

She ran 25.61sec in the 200m in Whanganui at the summer's second Classic meet of the season.

Te Awamutu's Leah Belfield claimed first in 25.18sec, while Wanganui's Emma Osborne was third in 26.14sec.

Meanwhile, double Olympic medallist Nick Willis showed his class to head an impressive 1500m field.

He finished in 3min 41.70sec, beating Tauranga runners Julian Oakley and Samuel Tanner, both of whom finished within a second and a-half of Willis.

In the under-20 3000m, which doubled as the national championships, Taranaki's Hannah O'Connor dominated. The 17-year-old, who starred at the national secondary school championships in Dunedin last month, defended her title comfortably.

Her time of 9min 36.92sec put her seven seconds ahead of second-placed Kirstie Rae.

Wellington's Sam Hyde-Smith ran 8min 35.88sec to win a closer men's race from Auckland's Alexander Hull.
