There has been another casualty of the heightened Covid-19 alert levels.

The Clyde to Alexandra 10km road race has been cancelled for the first time after being held for 52 consecutive years.

Organisers of the event, originally scheduled for September 5, were unable to guarantee it could operate under Alert Level 2 restrictions, notably the gathering limit of 100 people.

Alexandra Harrier and Walking Club president Jo Wilson said it had been disappointing to cancel the event.

However, there was plenty of understanding of the situation from the community.

Event organiser Bill Godsall had contacted insurance, WorkSafe and health and safety partners, all of whom agreed a Covid-19 case at the event would leave it open to liability.

The event — which last year attracted about 300 runners — consisted of various running and walking races over different distances, although the 10km run was the flagship race.

They had looked into running in separate bubbles.

However, that came unstuck around the use of toilets, while there were not going to be enough volunteers to use three different starting points.

There was also no guarantee there would not be more than 100 people at registration, particularly as there tended to be lots of on-the-day entrants.

Wilson said the event had about 20 volunteers spread around the course. While that would be enough under regular circumstances, it would be a stretch too far with the extra requirements.

It was unlikely to be rescheduled, due to clashes with other events on the calendar.
