Several Otago athletes achieved placings at the South Island track and field championships in Timaru on Saturday.
Schuyler Orr, Felix McDonald and Nathan MacDonell had a close battle in the 100m, with just 0.02sec separating them.
Orr and McDonald both ran 11.11sec, although Orr was awarded second place, while MacDonell was fourth in 11.13sec.
Canterbury’s Scott Walker took first in 10.98sec.
That same trio had another battle in the 200m, but McDonald emerged a more comfortable victor there.
He ran 22.40sec to win, while MacDonnell was third in 22.80sec and Orr finished further back in sixth.
Todd Bates also claimed a win in the men’s hammer throw with a best distance of 47.84m.
Not to be outdone, Hamish Mears matched his Taieri clubmate in the under-18 discus, throwing 43.77m to beat South Canterbury’s William Valentine, who threw 43.02m.
Mears also threw 14.50m to finish third in the under-18 shot put.
Fiona Centers claimed a second and third in the 200m and 100m respectively, running 12.29sec and 25.28sec.
Louise Richards showed her versatility to claim titles in the high jump, pole vault and javelin, while finishing second in the shot put.
Meanwhile, in the local meeting at the Caledonian Ground the javelin was the standout event.
Tori Peeters won the women’s competition with a throw of 53.91m, while Paralympian Holly Robinson was second with 40.22m.
On the men’s side, Anton Schroeder won the under-20 event with 53.88m, edging Ethan Walker, who threw 48.89m.
Liam Condliffe jumped 6.28m to win the men’s long jump, while Leonie Palmer won the women’s event with 4.78m.
George Vare was the fastest in the 100m in 11.57sec, while Joccoaa Palmer was the fastest woman in 13.15sec.
