Falcons' season ended by Magic

The South Pacific Magic remains alive - but only just.

It held out the Andy Bay Falcons in women's club basketball's minor semifinal on Tuesday night to survive with a 64-63 win.

The result means the Magic advances to face Varsity, which lost Tuesday night's major semifinal, for the right to play Ajax in the final.

Ajax secured that berth with an 84-61 win, remaining unbeaten on the court this season.

It was the Falcons that had their season come to an end in heart-breaking fashion, however.

They were unable to finish down the stretch as the Magic defence held on to snap a six-game losing streak.

The scores remained close most of the way, the Magic leading 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, then 28-27 at halftime.

It pulled out to a 50-41 lead at the end of the third quarter, but had to withstand a surge from the Falcons in the final period.

Natalie Visger and Soraya Umaga-Jensen had 17 and 16 points respectively for the Magic, the duo scoring the majority of the team's points through the second and third quarters.

Zoe Richards had 26 points for the Falcons, while Jodie Hope added 15.

In the other match, Ajax proved too strong for Varsity with a resounding win thanks to a big third quarter.

After being tied at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, Ajax opened up the lead to 37-29 at halftime.

It then did real damage in the third quarter, taking that score to 63-40, a 23-point margin which remained at the final buzzer.

Nicole Ruske led the scoring with 32 points, while several others all chipped in with between eight and 14.

Bronwyn Kjestrup top-scored for Varsity with 14, while Grace Love scored 12 points and Tara Clement and Jeanie Pattison 11 each.
