South’s top teams to battle

Dunedin club champion Mid City Magic will play Southland champion Turbos at the Edgar Centre today.

It will aim to defend the lower South Island title it won last year, when it thrashed the Thundercats 108-76 in Invercargill.

This year it will be a depleted Magic side that takes the court. Several players are away at the national tertiary championships in Auckland; however, it still has quality and is bolstered by players from its second A grade side.

Tip-off is at 2.30pm.

Meanwhile the University of Otago had an impressive start to the men’s national tertiary basketball championships in Auckland yesterday.

The side beat AUT 107-67 in its opening pool game.It played Massey University last night and has its final pool game at 8am today, against Lincoln University.

Should Otago make that far, the final will be played at 3pm tomorrow.
