Sarah Scott (North East Valley) was rewarded for a successful season when she retained her Dunedin female bowler of the year award.

Terry Scott, who won the men’s award in 2015, was a proud father when his daughter kept the family name at the top of Dunedin bowls when she received the Millie Khan Memorial Trophy.

Sarah Scott (33) won three titles, mixed pairs, open pairs and champion of champions’ singles, during the season and now has five titles and a gold star.

The Dunedin bowler of the year award is based on results in local centre events  and  national and international events do not count.Scott won with 21 points.  Beth Brown (Taieri), who won the award in 2015, was runner-up with 18 points.

The highlight of Scott’s season was to win six of her seven singles games to help the Dunedin women’s sevens team win its first national teams title  with less than eight years’ experience.

She also reached the semifinals of the fours at the New Zealand open championships at New Plymouth.Scott was one of four bowlers who received her gold star during the awards ceremony at the Taieri Bowling Club last night.

The others were: Mike Bracegirdle (Forbury Park), Regan Larkin (Kaikorai) and Jean Young (Taieri).

Bracegirdle won the open pairs, open triples and champion of champion’s fours and received the Stan Seear Trophy when named the Dunedin male bowler of the year.

Bracegirdle has had an interesting career and won his first three centre titles in 2004. He had a lean period for 13 years before adding three more titles last summer.

Bracegirdle also finished third equal in the national club pairs with clubmate Elliot Mason.

Geoff Wilson (Kaikorai)  achieved the other domestic milestone of the season by winning the open singles to gain his  15th Bowls Dunedin title and a second bar for his gold star.

Special recognition was given to Mike Kernaghan (North East Valley) who won a gold medal in the fours and bronze in the pairs at World Bowls at Christchurch.

He is the first Dunedin bowler to win a World Bowls gold medal since Ian Dickison was in the winning men’s triples in 1988.

Kernaghan also won the North East Valley invitation singles, and Lesley Dabinett the Dunedin Casino Invitation women’s pairs.

Jonty Horwell (Kaikorai) was named the young bowler of the year for winning the national under-21 singles title and coming third-equal in the national club fours and the national men’s sevens for players with less than eight years of bowls.

Jean Shelton (Tainui) was named the volunteer of the year for her work at the Dunedin Bowls Stadium.

Andy McLean (North East Valley) and Paul King (Andersons Bay) competed in PBA world finals in the United Kingdom.
