The good news: Port Chalmers bowler Allan Warren has been named in the New Zealand team for the sixth International Deaf Bowls championships in Perth next year.

The bad news: it is a self-funding event and he must raise $2000 for the trip.

Warren (67), a retired cleaner, is a pensioner and does not have the cash himself and relies on financial help from others to represent his country.

The Port Chalmers Bowling Club is backing Warren and has set up a fundraising barometer in the clubrooms aimed at raising $2000.

"We have a bucket in the local New World and another one at Forbury Park to help us with the fundraising," green keeper for the Port Chalmers club Bruce Malcolm said yesterday.

Warren, the only Otago bowler in the New Zealand team of six men and six women, will be playing in his third international.

He won a silver medal at the championships in Christchurch in 2003 and also competed in Wales in 2007.

"Its been great for Dad," daughter Sandra said. "The sport keeps him busy and gives him a chance to travel around the world."

Warren was diagnosed with hearing problems at the age of 8 and studied at a school for the deaf in Christchurch to learn sign language and lip read.

He started playing bowls at 18 for the Port Chalmers club and also played for Caledonian when he lived in Dunedin.

"I like the feel of bowls and like to enjoy myself," Warren said. "I like the feel of a bowl."

He uses sign language to communicate with his skip and does not have any problems on the bowling green.

Warren is a specialist lead and will be at the front of the pair, triple and four in Perth.

Donations to help Warren get to Perth can be sent to: Bruce Malcolm, Port Chalmers Bowling Club, 15(a) Blackman Ave, Port Chalmers, Dunedin.
