Clinton bowler Wynette McLachlan did not win an elusive national title, but she emerged from the national championship with credit after finishing runner-up in the pairs.

McLachlan was not able to emulate the deeds of her husband, Winston, who won the men's pairs title with Les Morrison for the Clinton club in 1986.

The pairs final was won by the World Bowls champions Val Smith and Jo Edwards when they beat Marilyn Patterson and McLachlan 17-11.

But a lot of the plaudits after the game were given to McLachlan for giving the world champions such a worthwhile challenge and making them work hard for their second national pairs title.

They also won in Christchurch in 2004 when Edwards finished runner-up in the singles to Shona Klimeck (Hokonui).

''Wynette played some stunning shots and was a little unlucky when the jack went the wrong way,'' Jo Edwards said.

''We knew it would be tough because they had beaten some high class teams on the way. We were never going to take them lightly.

''Wynette and Val [Smith] were the standout players in the final today.''

McLachlan hones her skills in the tough competition on the Queensland Gold Coast each winter.

International Smith was the dominant lead and controlled the head. It forced McLachlan to play a series of rescue shots.

''I tried to keep us in there and I'm pleased with the way it went,'' McLachlan said.

''We took them to a full 18 ends and that is something I'm very proud of.''

It was only Smith's third national title in 12 national championships. She won her first in the pairs in 2004 and her second in the fours last year.

''It means a lot to me and was certainly not ho-hum,'' Smith said. ''It is always hard work getting through the qualifying rounds.''

The Onehunga pair of Chris Le Lievre and Ryan Bester had a 20-9 win over Matt Gallop and Ali Forsyth (Taren Point) in the men's pairs.

It was the second national title for Bester who skipped the winning fours team in 2008.

It was particularly pleasing for Le Lievre (25), who had finished runner-up with Gallop in the pairs two years ago.

Pairs is a leads game and Le Lievre did his job by dominating the first 10 ends as his team shot to 17-3 lead.

''The trial ends felt good and set it up for me,'' he said.

''When Matt found his length we were too far in front.

''After that I just concentrated on getting them close and playing no bad bowls.''

When Gallop finally found the green the Taren Point pair scored five shots on the next three ends to reduce the gap to 17-8 after 13 ends.

Taren Point scored three on the first end but Onehunga came back strongly with accurate draw bowls to score a five on the second end.

They then gained threes on the next two ends with fluke shots to extend the margin to 11-3 after just four ends.

''We then concentrated on defending our lead,'' Bester said.

They did this by scoring singles on the next six ends to extend the lead to 17-3 after 10 ends.

Le Lievre and Bester have too much talent to lose from there and played defensive bowls to win the game 20-9.
