It has taken 35 years, but a New Zealand title was just as sweet for Colleen Ferrick when it finally arrived in Dunedin yesterday.

She was the second with Lois Stewart and Lynn Stowe in the Heretaunga (Hawkes Bay) women's triples team that won the national club title at Westpac Bowls Stadium.

The Heretaunga team won all five games and beat the previously unbeaten Carlton Cornwall team of Bev Crowe, Judi Wong and Karen de Jongh 17-8 in the final game.

It was the first national title for the three players, who had been members of the club team that finished runner-up in the club sevens late last season. It was particularly pleasing for Ferrick, who had also finished runner-up in the mixed pairs final with her husband, Bruce, in Dunedin a week ago.

Ferrick (72) started playing bowls in 1979 and won a bronze medal in the fours at the Commonwealth Games at Victoria, Canada, in 1994.

''I'm thrilled,'' Ferrick said, ''It's never happened before for us. We are over the moon. I've been close a few times.''

Stowe (62), a retired meat packer who has won 10 Hawkes Bay titles, was the skip.

''It didn't sink in that we'd won until I put the bowls in my bag,'' she said.

''I just wanted to sit down and have little cry. We will celebrate with a few wines tonight.''

Stewart (69), a retired banker, played a key role as lead.

''It was absolutely fantastic,'' she said.

''We started crying halfway up the green after we had won. We didn't expect it but knew it was possible because we play so well together.''

She has been playing bowls for 14 years and has won six Hawkes Bay titles. Her husband, Bruce, has won 28 Hawkes Bay titles.

Heretaunga took control early and led 11-4 after 10 of the 18 ends. It scored three on the 14th end to make the game safe and two on the 17th to end the game.

In other games, Heretaunga beat Manurewa Cosmopolitan (Counties Manukau) 22-14, Elmwood (Canterbury) 27-16, Petone Central (Wellington) 22-8 and Invercargill 13-11.

Final placings: Heretaunga 1, Carlton Cornwall 2, Manurewa Cosmopolitan 3, Elmwood 4, Invercargill 5, Petone Central 6.
