It was close, but the young Dunedin-based Otago team kept its cool on the second day to retain the zone six Paterson trophy.

Otago won the six-team contest by 18 points at the Dunedin indoor bowls stadium on Sunday to qualify for the national Welch trophy in Christchurch in September.

Otago, on 129, was followed by South Otago 111, Southland 101, North Otago 74, South Canterbury 63 and Central Otago 62.

At the end of the first day on Saturday, Otago held a one-point lead over South Otago but was three points behind after the first round on Sunday. Before the final round Otago had a 16-point cushion and gained two more points in the last round.

Veteran John Williams (51) was the oldest member of the Otago team and Jonty Horwell (17), in his first Paterson trophy, was the youngest.

The most successful Otago player was Dunedin tourism student Nick Sinclair (21), who won 12 of his 15 games in his fourth Paterson trophy. He was the second-most successful player of the tournament. His three loses were to South Otago teams.

Kristen Gould (27), the son of former New Zealand representative Trevor Gould, won 11 games, lost three and drew one. He was ranked third-equal with Chris Moffit (South Otago).

Gould won the New Zealand junior singles title in 2006 and was joined in the Otago team by Horwell who won the same event two years ago.

Horwell, an electrical apprentice, won 10 games, drew one and lost four.

The best player at the tournament was Marilyn Paterson (South Otago), who had 12 wins, a draw and only two losses in her third Paterson trophy.

The Balclutha woman has won just three South Otago titles in 15 years of bowls, but everything is falling into place for her this year.

Moffit (41), a recreation officer with the New Zealand Blind Foundation, lost only three games.

He was captain of the South Island indoor bowls team for five years from 2010 to 2014 and represented Canterbury in the Paterson trophy for seven years.

Evelyn Bisset was the best-performed Central Otago player, winning eight games, drawing one and losing six.

Mike Howard, an Oamaru plumber and drainlayer, was the best-performed North Otago bowler, winning won seven games, drawing one and losing seven.

He played with Wally Strachan in the pairs and they lost narrowly 9-7 to Otago's Daniel French and Daniel Sinclair. Howard's last bowl pushed the jack towards his own bowl and it needed the umpire's measure to decide the game.
