Bowls: Rance part of rare away win

Lynne Rance is on the brink of two milestones: a 15th title in indoor bowls and her 20th title with big bowls outdoors.

Rance, who has been playing outdoor bowls for 22 years, is ranked fourth on the women's list with 19 titles and second on the list for small bowls indoors with 14 titles.

The only female indoor bowler to gain a third bar to her gold star is Carolyn Crawford with 15 titles. Crawford also sits one spot ahead of Rance in outdoor bowls with 21 titles.

Rance was a key member of the Otago indoor team that gained a rare away win when it beat Canterbury 128 match points to 124 in Christchurch last weekend.

Otago retained the title in the inter-provincial fixture that was first held in 1989. The away win was significant because Otago always struggles in Christchurch.

The outstanding performers there for Otago were Bev Paterson and Brandon Williams, who were unbeaten with seven wins and a draw.

Daniel French had six wins and two draws and Pauline Gladding, Daniel Sinclair and Adam Williams had six wins and one draw.

The next inter-provincial contest will be the women's eights in Dunedin on May 17 and 18.

It brings together teams of eight players from Otago, Central Otago, South Otago, Southland, North Otago and South Canterbury.

The women's eights trophy was won by Southland last year and the Sandra Gould Memorial Trophy was won by Sandra Peard (Southland).

Australia won the Trans Tasman Cup when it beat the New Zealand PBA team 2-1 in a closely fought final in New South Wales yesterday.

Defending individual champion Murray Glassey (Hawkes Bay) gave New Zealand a good start with a two-set 9-8, 11-5 win over top Australian Aaron Teys.

Duane White (Dunedin) won the first set against Ben Twist but lost the tie-breaker after the Australian drew level in the second set.

Ken Walker (Dunedin) lost the first set to Steve Halmai 8-7 and New Zealand lost the series when the second set was drawn 6-6.

This was the fifth annual PBA test series and Australia has won three and New Zealand two.
