Bowls: Southerners qualify for NZ schools championship

Two members of the Bowls New Zealand development squad, Sheldon Bagrie-Howley (Gore) and Sarah Davidson (Roxburgh), have been included in the Zone 6 team for the New Zealand secondary schools championships next month.

They will represent the zone from Timaru south in the singles at the championships in Christchurch from December 11-13.

Bagrie-Howley (16) made his mark when he won the national under-20 Kittyhawk tournament in Auckland in April. He honed his skills by playing in the Professional Bowls Association events last winter.

Bagrie-Howley is a natural on the green and also has a talent for indoor bowls, as he showed this year when he was named player of the tournament at the New Zealand junior championships in Wellington.

He retained his pairs title with Gore High School team-mate Cameron Tremaine and was third equal in the singles.

Davidson (18) represented Central Otago at the national junior indoor championships in August.

But the outdoor game is her main interest and she has played the game for the past five years.

She was fourth in the singles at the national secondary schools championships in Dunedin a year ago. The Roxburgh Area School pupil has the ability to represent New Zealand at the highest levels in the future and could win the singles in Christchurch.

Twins Elliott and Oliver Mason (Otago Boys') won the plate section in Dunedin last year and will be keen to make the final eight this year.
