Holmes (58), an administration officer, was the first woman to make the largely male-dominated team for six years.
The last females to represent the province in the premier event were Lyn Rance and Shelley Keene in 2006.
Holmes (nee Steel) grew up in Dunedin and was educated at Macandrew Intermediate and Queen's High School.
She started playing indoor bowls in 1996 for the Momona Club with husband John.
"I was friends with a group of people and John and me were the only ones who didn't play," she said. "They made it sound exciting so we went along and investigated it."
She enjoys the competitiveness of the game.
"The game's a great leveller," she said. "You can be a super-hero one minute and play like a beginner the next."
She become skilful at the sport from the start and has represented Otago since 1998.
Holmes won her only South Island title when she was lead for Ross Garner in the mixed pairs in 2007. She also won two inter-island medals when she represented the South Island in the women's triples in 2003 and 2004.
Holmes will play in the inter-island match against the North Island for the ninth time, at Ashburton next Saturday.
She was a member of the Otago team that won the women's eight in the competition for bowls centres from South Canterbury to Southland this year.
Holmes tried outdoor bowls but prefers to keep her summers free to enjoy time at the family holiday house at Twizel, where she enjoys mountain biking and kayaking.
She played for Otago against the touring North Island team at the Dunedin Indoor bowls stadium last night.
