The team's casual and training gear was unveiled in Auckland today as the New Zealand Olympic Committee confirmed the last of its 193 athletes for New Delhi with the announcement of the men's and women's hockey squads.
In May, the NZOC said this year's New Zealand campaign would feature a logo with a silhouette of Everest, the number 29028 and the names Hillary and Tenzing, to identify with the determination and resoluteness of character shown by pair during the first ascent of the world's highest mountain in 1953.
The number is Everest's height, in feet, as reported by the BBC.
Team chef de mission Dave Currie said he could think of no greater person than Sir Edmund, who later became High Commissioner to India, to inspire New Zealand's athletes in New Delhi.
"Tenzing was his climbing partner and together they bring to life the importance of a team," he said.
"Honouring Hillary and Tenzing through our team uniform will inspire our athletes to represent New Zealand with pride."
Women's hockey skipper Kayla Sharland gave the uniform the thumbs-up, saying she would be proud to wear it.
She identified with the Hillary and Tenzing theme, saying their feat was something the athletes wanted to emulate.
"For us, we want to achieve that as well - to climb to the highest point we can," she said.
"It's a cool idea and every athlete who is going over there will represent it well."
The individual sports will provide the competitors' playing strip at the Games, while the team's uniform for the opening ceremony will be revealed in New Delhi.
