New Zealand tennis hopeful Rubin Statham opened his Commonwealth Games singles account with an effortless win overnight (NZT).

Despite the heat, Statham barely raised a sweat on centre court in his 6-2 6-1 blitzing of Haydn Lee Lewis, of Barbados.

He and mixed doubles partner Marina Erakovic were knocked out in the first round, leaving Statham to focus on a singles campaign in which he faces Scottish doubles specialist Jamie Murray today.

Erakovic also plays her second round singles match today, against Jacklyn Lambert, of Bermuda.

For both New Zealanders, victory could well set up showdowns with two home town heros in the next round.

Erakovic is on course to meet Indian No 1 and national darling Sania Mirza while Statham may have to overcome leading Indian male Somdev Devvarman.
