Commonwealth Games: Two heat wins in pool for kiwis

New Zealand swimmer Glenn Snyders and Hayley Palmer have both had easy heat wins at the Delhi Commonwealth Games to qualify second fastest for their semifinals.

Snyders held the best time going into this evening's 100m breaststroke semifinals until Australian Christian Sprenger smashed the Commonwealth Games record in the final heat, clocking one minute 00.61sec.

Aucklander Snyders clocked 1min 1.30secs in the most impressive New Zealand outing at the Games until Palmer came along. His New Zealand record is 1min 00.17sec.

Palmer was strong in winning her heat of the women's 100m freestyle in 55.09s, topped only by Australian Alicia Coutts, who recorded 55.06sec in an earlier heat.

Palmer last night opted out of a swim-off for a place in the 50m butterfly final after qualifying eighth-equal to save herself for today's race.

New Zealanders Natasha Hind and Penelope Marshall will join her in the semifinals tonight, with Hind 10th fastest into the second round and Marshall 11th.

Daniel Bell and Moss Burmester will also be in action this evening, after both swam their way into the men's 50m butterfly semifinals.

Bell qualified ninth-fastest in 24.81sec, with Burmester 11th in 25.13sec.

Burmester, who yesterday failed to make the final of the 200m butterfly in which he was defending champion bounced back today with a season's best.

New Zealand also have two qualifiers in the women's 100m backstroke semifinals, with national recordholder Emily Thomas and Melissa Ingram both through to the evening session.

Ingram took the fifth-fastest time out of the heats - 1min 1.51sec - and Thomas the 10th in 1min 1.77sec, more than a second outside her New Zealand record.
