The Appleby Cricket Club marked a special day on Saturday with a five-wicket victory over Invercargill-Old Boys in Southland’s ILT Premier League club cricket competition.
Club stalwart Jamie Clark entered a rare club on Saturday as he brought up 200 games for Appleby.
He has become just the fourth Appleby player to play 200 games, joining Richard Wilson, Greg Munro, and Clinton Coad. Clark joined Appleby in 2000 as a schoolboy, following some encouragement from his teacher at the time, Richard Wilson.
He passed 2000 senior runs on Saturday and has taken 169 wickets in his 200 outings.
The all-rounder has been a key figure on and off the field for Appleby during the past 18 years and fittingly played an important role in Saturday’s victory in the game played at Winton.He took three for 20 to help reduce Invercargill-Old Boys to just 112 batting first. Jacob Downing (two for 11) was the other key contributor.
With the bat, Cody McKenzie chipped in with 29 and Liam McWilliam 26 for Invercargill-Old Boys.
In reply, Appleby wobbled at the start before the likes of Ankit Pursharthy (39 not out), Sam Lindsay (22no), Clinton Goad (18) steadied proceedings to get Appleby through to a win with five wickets and 20 overs still in hand.
Johnny Milnes-Winn took three of the five Appleby wickets to fall, finishing with three for 25.
James Ng continued his blistering start to the 2018-19 season with another strong performance for Marist against Waikoikoi on Saturday.
In round one Ng posted an impressive century against the Metro Tigers and on Saturday backed it up with 91 from just 70 balls against Waikoikoi.
Six Waikoikoi batsmen reached double figures but as a team, it could muster only 141 batting first.
No10 Warrick McKenzie top-scored with 25, while with the ball for Marist spinner Jeremy Boyle starred with four for 23.In reply, Ng got into his work, hitting six fours and six sixes as Marist passed the target in the 22nd over and with five wickets in hand.
Southland Boys’ High School spinner Jed Mockford also starred on Saturday picking up a five-wicket bag as the pupils recorded a 95-run victory over the Metro Tigers.
Batting first, Southland Boys’ posted 200 for eight thanks largely to Sean Withy’s knock of 58 in the middle order.Jerone Diack (26) and Isaac Fluery (31) provided handy knocks for Metro, but the target of 201 proved too large as the Tigers were bowled out for 105 in just the 24th over.
Mockford finished with five from 11 from six overs.
