The odds look good because Afghanistan comfortably beat Kenya by eight wickets in the first of two one-day internationals at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Wednesday night.
If Afghanistan wins again, it will move to second place in the World Cricket League Championship, behind Ireland, and automatically qualify for the 2015 World Cup.
It has won eight of its 13 matches in the league and, with one game left, sits one point behind the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands.
Afghanistan is on line to play two games at the University Oval in 2015.
The first will be against Sri Lanka, on February 22, and the second will be against the third qualifier four days later.
Otago Cricket Association commercial manager Craig Cumming said it would give added interest to the World Cup games in Dunedin.
''It will be interesting to see what the make-up of their team is and the style they play,'' he said.
''It will be nice to see a new team come to the World Cup.
''We have a nice mix for the games in Dunedin, because we have Sri Lanka down here, as well.
''I am sure Afghanistan will enjoy being in a smaller city like Dunedin. It will be a place that most of them thought they would never get to.''
The star of Afghanistan's win over Kenya was fast bowler Hamid Hassan, who took four wickets for 19 runs when Kenya was dismissed for 89 in 37.5 overs.
Afghanistan won the game in just 17.5 overs, Nawroz Mangal scoring 52 not out and wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad 33.
Cricket was first played in Afghanistan by British troops in Kabul in 1839.
The sport was popularised by Afghanistan refugees in Pakistan in the 1990s and the Afghanistan Cricket Federation was formed in 1995. It became a member of the International Cricket Council in 2001.
Sport was originally banned by the Taliban but an exception was made for cricket in 2000 and the national team toured England in 2006.
No international matches are played at home because of the security situation. Home games have been played in Pakistan, but most home games are now played at the Sharjah Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.
