Hard-hitting all-rounder Corey Anderson helped the Black Caps fashion a small lead on day two of their three-day match against Pakistan A in Sharjah.
Anderson used a mix of patience and aggression to compile a fine innings of 80, and at stumps the visitors held a 16-run lead.
Pakistan A resumed on 215 for nine but could not add to its overnight score. Legspinner Ish Sodhi picked up the final wicket to finish with five for 58.
New Zealand's reply got off to wobbly start, with openers Tom Latham (15) and Luke Ronchi (16) getting starts but failing to progress.
The same was true for Ross Taylor (11) and Kane Williamson (28), but Anderson gave the innings some momentum, whacking four sixes and eight fours.
BJ Watling joined Anderson at the crease and did what he does best. He stayed composed and dug in, getting through to 37 when New Zealand declared at 244 for eight.
Tim Southee was the complete opposite of Watling. He smashed three consecutive sixes in a brief 28-run cameo.
Otago's Neil Wagner secured an early breakthrough, removing opener Shan Masood for four. Pakistan A was resuming at 13 for one.
