Vice captain Michael Clarke says the Australians are confident of bouncing back in the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston starting Thursday (Friday NZT).

Clarke has been in sparkling form with the bat in the opening two Tests and said the tourists are ready to square the ledger at 1-1 in the Birmingham clash.

"We play this game for one reason: to win.

"We love the game we play, we'll be out there on Thursday backing ourselves 100 percent to win this game.

"We play our best cricket when the chips are down, we are 1-0 down and well take the positives out of that.

"We know where we let ourselves down over the past two Tests and we know the areas we want to improve.

"I'm certain if we play our best cricket we will win this Test.

Australia's No 5, who played arguably the best knock of his career in a losing cause at Lord's last week, said he was looking forward to locking horns again with England's inspirational allrounder Andrew Flintoff.

The big Lancastrian, who is retiring at the end of the series, is going to great lengths to be ready for the Edgbaston Test.

He is even sleeping with an ice-pack wrapped around his troublesome knee.

Clarke said England were wise to try to give Flintoff every chance of playing following his man of the match performance in London last week.

"He's an amazing player and has been for a long time, I'm not disappointed that I won't have to face him after this series again in Test cricket," he said.

"It's always a contest. I hope Andrew is fit and ready to go and can finish the series, he certainly deserves that.

"Unfortunately, I think he's going to be finishing as a loser when we win the series," Clarke said with a smile.

"I hope he's ready to go.

"No doubt he'll be ready on Thursday to give us some stick."

The covers came off the Birmingham pitch on Tuesday and it didn't look nearly as frightening as had been suggested following regular rain in the area over the past fortnight.

Clarke thought there would be a role for spinners to play at the ground in which Shane Warne took match figures of 10-162 in the 2005 clash.

Heavy storms are predicted for Wednesday.
