Cricket: Green Island retains senior Dunedin club title

Green Island has retained the Dunedin senior club title after back-to-back twenty/20 wins on Saturday.

The club retained the Bing Harris Shield, claiming it for an eighth time, with wins against Carisbrook-Dunedin (seven runs) and Albion (26 runs).

Green Island and Albion were both in contention for the title going into the weekend and both won rain-affected games in the morning, making their after-noon clash vital.

The defending champion knew victory would secure the title while Albion knew defeat would signal the end of its bid.

Green Island chose to bat after winning the toss and made 130 for five.

Josh Munro top-scored with 45 off 42 balls and Jordan Sheed added 31.

Albion lost quick wickets in reply and was never really in the hunt, with only PJ Cairns (36) getting a start in the innings of 104 for seven.

Jeremy Scott took two wickets for Green Island and four other bowlers had one each.

Albion's consolation was winning the Otago-Southland knockout competition earlier in the summer, which entitles it to play in the national club finals in Auckland next month.

Earlier on Saturday, Green Island had beaten Carisbrook-Dunedin in the ultimate in abbreviated cricket games: a five-over-a-side match.

Heavy rain had reduced the game to the minimum five overs each - hardly a genuine test of superiority but still a chance to score some points.

Green Island made 38 for three off its quota and kept Carisbrook-Dunedin to 31 for four.

Dunedin club cricket has become an increasingly convoluted competition that includes twenty/20 cricket, one-day cricket, declaration cricket and franchise cricket.

But Green Island was the most consistent side across all formats and its reward is another trophy in the Sunnyvale cabinet.in the Sunnyvale cabinet.
