Cricket: Kaikorai too strong for Country

Kaikorai 87/3 beat Otago Country XI 85 by 7 wickets.

Defending champion Kaikorai signalled its intention of winning the competition again this season, after comprehensive succesds in its first game in the Dunedin senior competition on Saturday.

Batting first, Otago Country got off to a disastrous start, losing its first three wickets for seven runs, to some good bowling from Jacob Duffy.

Duffy clean bowled opening Otago Country batsman Jonathan Homer for a duck in the second over, and then continued to bowl with confidence, ending up with three wickets for 19 runs off his seven overs.

The only batsman to show some fight was Sean Windle, down the order. He hit 19 runs to try to save some respectability.

However, he could not prevent Otago Country being all out for 85 after 30 overs.

The Kaikorai batsmen showed no signs of struggling as they knocked off the paltry target inside 20 overs for the loss of three wickets. Iain Robertson batted strongly for his 29.

North East Valley 167/4beat Taieri 161 by 6 wickets

Last season's runner-up North East Valley started strongly as it knocked off Taieri's 161 runs inside 40 overs through a strong batting performance from Jimmy Neesham (62).

Taieri looked dead and buried after losing a quick succession of wickets to be floundering at 84 for eight, but some late batting heroics from Duncan Anderson (28) ensured the team ended up with a respectable 161 for nine from its 50 overs.

Opening bowler Jamie Murley was the chief destroyer for North East Valley, taking three wickets for 21 runs from his 10 overs.

Neesham then batted his side to victory after 37.2 overs.

University Grange 138/2 beatCarisbrook Dunedin 133 by 8 wickets

Despite strong batting performances from Carisbrook batsmen Tony McEntyre (45) and Jordy Horrell (28), the team lost wickets regularly to stutter to 133 all out.

University Grange then made light work of the total, as Aaron Redmond blasted 73 runs to knock off the total with ease.

Redmond combined with Jesse Simpson (50 not out) for a 117-run partnership for the second wicket, before Carisbrook bowler Brayden Lindsay took the wicket of Redmond.

Michael Bracewell then came in and knocked off the last runs, hitting a six to power his side home.

Green Island 120/6 beatAlbion 119 by 4 wickets

Green Island was the victor in a low-scoring match on Saturday, as opening bowler Dion Lobb took four wickets to restrict Albion to 119 all out.

No batsmen took control of the game for Albion, as lower-order batsman Charlie McLean top-scored with 18 runs not out.

Green Island, despite losing wickets regularly, knocked the total off with four wickets to spare.

Henry Blackwell was the main contributor, hitting 29 not out.
