Otago Cricket is not celebrating yet, but the Champagne is on ice in anticipation of the Otago Volts gaining approval to compete in the lucrative Indian Champions League.

The league's committee held a planning meeting in South Africa overnight and was expected to make some firm plans, including confirming Otago's participation in the $12 million twenty/20 tournament.

Otago Cricket chief executive Ross Dykes yesterday said the signs looked promising for Otago.

"I'm not getting my hopes up too high because in these sorts of incidents it just creates disappointment if it does not happen.

"However, I've been told all along it is very hopeful."

Internet site Wikipedia has Otago pencilled in alongside South Africa's Diamond Eagles and Cape Cobras, and Australia's New South Wales Blues and Victoria Bushrangers, as the five teams confirmed for what is anticipated will be a 12-team tournament staged in India in late September-early October.

Mr Dykes said if Otago's invitation was confirmed it would be a coup for the team and the association.

"It's a huge opportunity for Otago cricket. It isn't just a money thing, it is a chance to increase our profile.

"It's an opportunity for players to establish themselves [on the world stage] and in the extreme, do well enough to be offered an IPL [Indian Premier League] contract in the future."

The inaugural champions league was scheduled for India in December last year but was cancelled following terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November.
