Queenstown tyro Hugo Bogue did his best to help New Zealand stave off elimination at the under-19 world cup in Zimbabwe yesterday.

However, the opening batter’s entertaining knock was in vain as his side fell to an eight-wicket loss to Pakistan at the Harare Sports Club.

It means the Baby Black Caps cannot make the semifinals of the tournament but will still have pride left to play for when they have their final game against England tomorrow night (NZ time).

Bogue’s early blitz suggested a decent total was on the cards as the young Kiwis lost the toss and were asked to bat yesterday.

He lost fellow opener Marco Alpe, set to join Bogue at the Albion club next summer, early, but did not let that faze him.

Bogue blasted six fours and two sixes as he raced to 39 off 27 balls, putting on 48 for the second wicket with fellow Otago batter and New Zealand under-19 captain Tom Jones.

When Bogue and Jones (15 off 16 balls) were dismissed in the space of five deliveries, it prompted a collapse.

Otago bowler Mason Clarke battled away at the tail for 17 off 48 balls but New Zealand were rolled for 110 in the 29th over.

Pakistan appear to have a couple of handy seamers in Abdul Subhan (four for 11) and Ali Raza (three for 36).

In reply, Sameer Minhas thrashed an unbeaten 76 to guide Pakistan to victory in just the 18th over.

Clarke took one of the two wickets for New Zealand.

Pakistan’s victory sets up a virtual quarterfinal against unbeaten rivals India, who smashed Zimbabwe by 204 runs thanks to an unbeaten century from Vihaan Malhotra.

England and defending champions Australia are the other unbeaten teams.
